GEO 0910 - GEOSTATISTICS AND COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

This course will offer students a chance to gain familiarity with fundamental concepts in statistics while also learning software frequently used to implement statistical analyses, produce publication-quality graphs/figures, and utilize basic geospatial technology. Examples will be developed using data encountered in the geosciences. Descriptive statistics will be discussed in which parameters such as mean, median, mode, variance, and distribution are calculated. Inferential statistics whereby ¿populations¿ of data might be compared or from which probability of occurrence might be estimated will also be covered. Students will work through real-world example problems to solve geologic problems, produce publication-grade graphs and figures, perform data analysis, utilize geospatial technology (remote sending, GIS, GPS, and mapping), and become more familiar with the management of small and large data sets.
